Scoring Guide & Proficiency Levels
Understanding the English Language Assessment for Commercial Drivers
The CDL-English Verify™ assessment evaluates English language proficiency across four essential areas of commercial driving communication. Each section is worth 25 points for a total of 100 points.
Dispatch Communication - Listening
Tests ability to understand verbal dispatch instructions, route changes, and safety communications.
CDL Knowledge Test - Reading
Evaluates comprehension of CDL regulations, safety procedures, and written instructions (20 multiple-choice questions).
Traffic Signs Recognition
Measures understanding of U.S. traffic signs and their meanings critical for safe highway operation.
Verbal Q&A - Speaking
Assesses spoken English fluency, pronunciation, and ability to communicate driving situations (10 recorded responses).
Total Assessment: 100 points | Duration: 25-35 minutes
Minimum passing score (out of 100)
Drivers who score 75 or above receive a pre-qualification record demonstrating English language proficiency for CDL qualification pursuant to 49 CFR § 391.11(b)(2).
Based on the total score, drivers are classified into four proficiency levels:
Professional Driver
85-100Excellent command of English. Demonstrates fluent communication skills across all areas—listening, reading, sign recognition, and speaking. Capable of handling complex dispatch communications, emergency situations, and detailed documentation with minimal errors.
✓ Fully qualified for all commercial driving operations
Advanced Driver
75-84Strong English proficiency. Can effectively understand instructions, read CDL materials, recognize traffic signs, and communicate verbally with occasional minor errors. Comfortable with most driving-related communications and documentation.
✓ Qualified for commercial driving operations
Intermediate Driver
50-74Moderate English skills. Can handle basic driving communications and understand common instructions with some difficulty. May need additional support for complex situations or unfamiliar terminology. Additional English training required before qualification.
✗ Not qualified - English improvement required for qualification
Beginner Driver
0-49Limited English proficiency. Significant difficulties understanding dispatch communications, reading CDL regulations, or expressing ideas verbally. Additional English language training is required before CDL qualification.
✗ Not qualified - English training required
Each section (25 points max) is evaluated independently:
Outstanding comprehension and communication
Strong skills with minor errors
Basic understanding with noticeable errors
Significant difficulties in this area
